SELKIRK REX is a new breed of cat. It was originally discovered in the United States.
Thanks to their peculiar curled hair, they look like a soft teddy bear. Their appearance is quite unique, which is most noticeable among curly-haired breeds. They are a real spectacle.
They are very kind, and enjoy being around humans. They make obedient, calm and very good family members.
BUILD - medium sized, solidly built, strong musculature
EYES - round, wide-set.
EARS - medium sized, pointed and wide-set.
TAIL - thick, rounded, tapering towards the end.
COAT - thick, with loose curls or straight hair. Each strand of hair is curled, which is caused by a dominant gene.
The cat’s coat should be combed not more than once per week, with special care for the curled hair.
Their curly hair is visible immediately after birth, which later disappears and then reappears at around eight to ten month of age.
The mutation is dominant, therefore the animals exhibiting the phenotype can be.
- HETEROZYGOUS – and HOMOZYGOUS
HETEROZYGOUS - the kitten receives the gene responsible for curly hair from only one parent.
HETEROZYGOUS cats are more popular, because their head is rounder, their ears are smaller and their entire coat is curly.

They can be HOMOZYGOUS - when they inherit the gene responsible for curly hair from both parents.
HOMOZYGOUS cats have a propensity to shed their coat at a young age.
